Luke likes basketball. He really, really likes basketball. He can sink shots on his little hoop from seven feet or so, not bad when you consider he’s two years old and not quite three feet tall. The problem is, Luke is two and when you’re two, well, emotions get the best of you. We hit a phase several weeks ago that, when Luke missed a shot, he would drop to the floor and start screaming. Screaming aside, I didn’t want him to agonize over a missed shot every now and then, so I told him, “When you miss a shot, all you do is pick the ball up and shoot again.” Believe it or not, it only took two or three times of my repeating this mantra and the tantrums over airballs stopped.

A couple of days ago I lost a match in my racquetball league. Normally, it wouldn’t be a big deal, but I was really disappointed in my play and felt I could have done better. When I returned home, Luke asked, “Did you win, daddy?” I replied that I did not. Then, one of the most amazing things happened. He grabbed my hand, looked me right in the eyes and said, “Daddy, if you miss, you just pick the ball up and shoot again. Ok?”

Damn this kid is smart.

NYT, baby!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time. Through a series of events that would take far too much time and room to explain, Luke and I are featured in the Sunday Styles section of the New York Times. Not only are we (and this website) in the article, but they used this picture of he and I in front of a monitor with www.lukeseeley.com on it. I’m headed down to the newstand first thing in the morning to pick up several copies. I can’t wait to show one to him!

Santa DID come down the chimney!

It’s late, and I still have presents to wrap, but I had to get this down. All I can say is, “WOW!” I’d recommend Christmas Eve dinner at Timberline Lodge to anyone. That was the most fun I’ve had in a long time. The look on Luke’s face when Santa Claus dropped down out of the chimney was priceless. Of course, with 150 other parents all trying to get a shot of their child sitting in front of the fireplace, my pictures didn’t turn out all that great. I don’t need a picture to remember, though. I’ll never forget the way he looked up at me and, with eyes absolutely beaming, screamed, “Santa! Daddy! Santa!”

“Santa come down chimney!”

It’s one of Luke’s favorite phrases over the past month or so, usually blurted out in a high-pitched squeal of excitement, followed by a peek up the actual chimney. Just in case. So, it’s safe to say he “gets it” already at almost 21-months-old. I’d blame myself, but I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I am, after all, the world’s biggest fan of the holiday season.

Adding to the fun this year, though, is a special event that Kate discovered: Christmas Eve dinner at Timberline Lodge. Dinner is supposed to be excellent, several courses, dessert, the works. The best part, however, comes after dinner. Santa makes a visit to Timberline Lodge. He doesn’t just walk in the door, though, that would be too ordinary. No, Santa actually comes down the chimney and brings a gift for every kid attending dinner that night! I can’t wait. Four days and counting.

IncrediBlock Genius…part 2

Holy crap, the kid discovered another hidden word/sound: “Bird!” followed by chirping. Apparently, if you twist and turn and just cram the blocks into the slot on top you can randomly discover new features. I’m beginning to think there’s something to that old saying about monkeys and typewriters.

Eggs, eggs, eggs…

Luke was lucky enough to participate in three Easter egg hunts in less than a week! He has definitely mastered the art of finding hidden objects. It was amazing to watch him find an egg, pick it up, inspect it closely for a moment and then look up at us, eyes lit up as if to say, “Look what I found, guys!” Watching him enjoy the hunts this week also made me think future holidays, especially those involving fictional characters who visit your home, may be more fun for me than they are for him.

The joys of “naked time”…

Being a father has definitely taught me to see the lighter side of things when it comes to a lot of issues. Luke makes me laugh out loud every single day. I wasn’t at home to witness this event the other day, but I laughed out loud nonetheless. I received the following instant message from Kate while I was at work:

“Oh my gawd I wish so badly we had permanent video cameras in Luke’s room. After breakfast this morning I took his diaper off and let him run around upstairs while I picked out his clothes for the day. I look over and he’s peeing all over the floor, his dresser and himself. As I’m cleaning that up he starts pooping. Poops on the floor, walks through it so it’s all over his feet and tracks it all around the room.”

I’ve never been so sad, and yet so happy at the same time, to have been at work that day!
